PREVALENCE AND HEMATOLOGICAL PROFILE IN SICKLE CELL ANEMIA AMONG THE TRIBAL POPULATION OF ATTAPPADY, PALAKKAD, KERALA

The aim of the study is to find out the prevalence of sickle cell anemic patients and also to determine hematological profile of sickle cell disease (SCD) from the tribal population of Attappady, Palakkad District, Kerala. This prospective observational study was conducted in the Community health center, Agaly, Attappady. All the patients with sickle cell anemia were included in the study irrespective of their age. The exclusion criteria were patients unwilling to participate and patients other than the tribal community. 105 patients were enrolled in this study. Out of this sickle cell anemic patients 43(40.95%) were males and 62(59.04%) were females. Among these patients 44 were adults and 61 were children. Among children 33(54.09%) were male children and 28(45.90%) were female children. Mean age of adult male was 29.3(12.36) whereas mean age of female adult was 35.02(11.79). In the case of male and female children the mean age is 12.50(4.35) and 13.42(3.52) respectively. Hb level was higher in male adults (9.31±1.13 g/dL) than in females (8.63±1.30 g/dL). Hematological parameters were not showed any statistical significance, but WBC levels between male and female children and RDW between male and female adults were showed statistically significant data.
