Abstract

Snakes are usually found in every part of the globe. However, the type of snake found in a particular area varies considerably. There are around 3000 different types of snake prevalent in different parts of the world. The aim of the study to investigate that incidence of snakebite cases admitted to the MGM hospital, Warangal district, Andhra Pradesh, Southern India. The case sheet of all patients with snake bite evaluated in tertiary care hospital 1st January- 31st July, 2011 was recorded. We collected prospective data obtained from the emergency care department of the hospital on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. During this six month period 2011, a total of 92 patients with potential snakebite were evaluated. 32 patients from this initial group were excluded from the study. Excluded patients included twelve children, six patients incorrectly labeled as having snakebite after scorpion or bee stings, and fourteen patients who did not display any signs of envenoming and were discharged from the emergency department. Data was therefore available for 60 patients admitted to the medical wards. This study shows that management of snake bite could be improved by rapid administration of snake anti-venom in appropriate doses. Our article suggests that develop an interdisciplinary approaches may essential to reduce the mortality rate of snake bite.
