Abstract

Women undergoing caesarean section have 5 to 20 fold greater risk for infection and infection morbidity compared with vaginal birth. In developing countries the overall rate is around 12% but can reach up to 40%.Infectious complications following caesarean birth include febrile morbidity, wound infection, endometritis and urinary tract infection. Infections are commonly poly microbial pathogens. Prophylactic antibiotics in women undergoing Caesarean section substantially reduced the incidence of febrile morbidity, wound infection, endometritis, serious maternal infectious complications .The study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Total number of patients analyzed were 130.The no of patients with prophylactic treatment who got infection was very low(17.6%).The no of patients without prophylactic treatment who got infection was very high (82.3%). Our study showed a remarkable decrease in the incidence of infection during caesarean section when antibiotic prophylaxis was given.
