Abstract

PHARMACO THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES TO HYPOTHYROIDISM: ROLE OF MEDICATION MONITORING

Hypothyroidism, which is a condition of an underactive thyroid gland is treated with thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which is usually levothyroxine. Nevertheless, medication prescription is only a part of the effective management since this approach will presuppose close attention to medication usage to achieve the best treatment results and reduce the possibility of complications. The first aim of the treatment is to balance the levels of thyroid hormones, and such vital indicators of treatment efficacy as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and the free thyroxine (T4) are introduced. Frequent observation of these biomarkers is needed to adjust the doses because under- and over-treatment can be side effects, such as cardiovascular problems and bone loss. Comorbidities, age, and drug interactions are factors that can affect the effectiveness of levothyroxine, which has a need to be used with individual therapy. The involvement of the pharmacist in the monitoring of the medication and patient counselling is paramount in medication compliance to achieve drug interaction, and optimal therapy. Combination therapy of levothyroxine and liothyronine, and new solutions in personalized medicine show development with potential to improve patient outcomes specifically to patients that do not respond optimally to conventional treatment. Real-time monitoring integration of digital health tools and the fact that lifestyle issues are also taken into account, contribute to the management of hypothyroidism even higher. The abstract describes the significance of a patient-centered, holistic approach to pharmacotherapy by incorporating frequent monitoring, individualized patient attention, and patient education to have optimal thyroid activity and enhance patient quality of life.
