One of the novel approaches in the area of sustained drug delivery was Gastro retentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS).Several techniques have been proposed to increases the Gastric residence time of dosage forms such as floating systems, swelling systems, hydro dynamically balanced systems and low density systems etc. Diltiazem Hydrochloride is a calcium channel blocker, it is widely used in the treatment of hypertension. In present investigation bilayered floating tablets of Diltiazem Hydrochloride are designed to enhance the bioavailability and patient compliance. Bilayered system containing IR layer for sudden release of the drug and SR layer for sustained release of the drug. Tablets are prepared by wet granulation method using the polymers in different ratios. In – vitro drug release studies were revealed that, the release rate of the drug was retarded as the concentration of the polymer increases in the formulation. The formulations followed first order kinetics and Fickian&nonfickian diffusion.
