Abstract

India has witnessed about 30% rise in PCOS cases in the last couple of years. PCOS is being under-evaluated and possibly under diagnosed in the adolescent population. Physicians caring for adolescent girls should have increased awareness on PCOS and its diagnosis. Given the increasing prevalence of PCOS, its effects of physical and mental health, and its expense for the treatment, one might wonder why there is such a lack of awareness about PCOS. This study is intended to find the incidence of the polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) among adolescent girls and awareness of polycystic ovarian syndrome among them. Structured interview which included a questionnaire on PCOS was conducted among 323 girls of different colleges pursuing various courses like pharmacy, B.Tech, physiotherapy. Amongst 323 girls, 55 girls were diagnosed as having PCOS. 115 females had acne, 121 had irregularity of menses, 63 had hirsutism. In this study, 12 adolescent and young girls had information about PCOS from teacher, 50 students got information from friend, 50 students got information from a doctor, 14 students got information from newspaper while 5 students got information from internet. 140 girls were aware of PCOS while 177 were unaware of PCOS. The importance of lifestyle changes like healthy diet and brisk exercise must be made aware to the young girls through curriculum. Hazards of a sedentary lifestyle must be made understandable to make them both physically and mentally healthy.
