Abstract

There is the need of Scientific validation for our Siddha system of medicines and it is the right time to prove the safety and efficacy of Siddha medicines in a scientific manner. Aim: To characterize and standardize the Siddha medicine Muthu Parpam(MP) with physicochemical, biochemical and instrumental analysis. Materials and Methods: The drugs were purified and prepared as medicine according to the Standard Operating Procedure mentioned in the Siddha Classical text book. The sample is analyzed for Physicochemical, Biochemical, HPTLC, XRD, FTIR analysis and test for aflatoxins. Results: Biochemical analysis of MP indicates the presence of calcium, sulphate, chloride, carbonate, ferrous iron, amino acid and zinc. The physicochemical character of MP is Grey colour, pH 8.80, Total Ash value is 85.90%. Water and acid insoluble ash values are 9.10±0.15, 3.10±0.120, Loss on drying at 105ºC is 0.20±0.140 and Water soluble extractive value is 3.00±0.500. The HPTLC analysis indicates the presence four versatile phytocomponents within it. XRD: confirming that the MP is composed of mainly Calcium Nano particles. The FTIR spectra for Muthu parpam indicates the presence of the functional groups such as Hydroxy group. H bonded, Methylene(>CH2), Alkenyl, Carbonate ion, Alkyl substituted ether, Epoxy & oxirane rings, Methylene, Aliphatic iodo compounds, Polysulfides. Test for aflatoxins: The Sample drug MP is free from Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2. Discussion: The Physico chemical parameters gives the characteristic feature of MP and pH indicates MP is alkaline in nature. The high intensity of the XRD lines indicates the MP is in crystalline nature and Nano particle in size. Hence, the absorption of MP with the crystalline size less than 200nm through the intestine can be expected. Conclusion: This analytical work on Muthu Parpam reveals its characteristic feature, components, structure, size and functional groups in it and thus describes the medicine MP in detail in scientific manner
